Heifer International's Learning Center at Overlook Farm is a sustainable farm.
It is in the Central region of Massachusetts
Description
Overlook Farm is a learning center for Heifer International, a non-profit organization devoted to working with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. Our purpose as a learning center is to provide experiential education that inspires, challenges, and engages people to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. The gardens are just one aspect of our farm, which is open to the public 7 days a week. We also offer educational programs, farm tours, local and residential volunteer opportunities, a summer day camp, livestock from around the world, bee hives, a gift shop and a Global Village. The Global Village is comprised of shelters, livestock and gardens that are representative of nine countries where Heifer works.
The garden spaces include two acres of organic vegetables, culinary and medicinal herbs, flowers, and raspberries. The harvest primarily goes to our kitchen to provide locally grown, nutritious meals for visiting groups. Excess produce is sold at a local farmer’s market and an on-site farm stand. Overlook Farm grows over 50 vegetables and are continually trying to improve the stewardship of the land.
The Global Village gardens offer exciting opportunities to grow and learn about different crops and cultivation methods throughout the world. Some of these crops include: quinoa, rice, amaranth, millet, sorghum, tobacco, peanuts, okra, and mushrooms.
The goal of the Overlook Farm garden is to model and teach about teach about sustainable agriculture and food systems, and how they relate to the health and integrity of our communities. We hope you will come work and learn with us soon.
We have seasonal openings for garden and farmer-chef residential volunteer positions. Please call for more information.
